We are an international group of gardeners and garden lovers in Luxembourg. The club has a diverse programme – garden visits, workshops, and presentations of different garden-related topics. We aim to enjoy, share and learn about gardens and gardening!
We want to encourage everyone from complete beginners to those with more experience to enjoy gardening in all its different forms, from pots on a terrace or balcony to vegetable gardens to ornamental gardens, formal and informal. We are especially keen to promote gardening that enhances biodiversity and mitigates the effects of climate change.
History
The Greenfingers Club was founded in 1977 by two British gentlemen who thought it would be nice for gardening enthusiasts to get together once a month on a Saturday morning to see each other’s gardens and talk about gardening. Apparently, not too long after they decided to play golf instead and the ladies took over the running of the club. There were only a dozen members at this stage.
Although it was started by British expats the club was never exclusively British; other nationalities with competent English joined in quickly and the club grew. At the beginning members just met in each other’s gardens, had a cup of coffee, chatted and exchanged plants. In the winter in those days before satellite TV members watched videos of the Chelsea flower show and other films and had talks on various subjects. The first Greenfingers Trip was to the gardens of Annevoie and Freyr in Belgium. It was undertaken in shared private cars, people brought their own picnics.
The club kept growing, and more Luxembourgers joined. The first bus day trip was in about 1992 to Beervelde park in Belgium. These bus trips have become a popular feature of the programme. They nearly always include a visit to a nursery and result in a bus full of plants. On one occasion someone even bought a not-so-small tree. Many gardens in France, Germany, Belgium and England have been visited.
